It's now official. Today, October 28th 2014 is the day that HTML 5.0 was announced a official recommendation by the WWW consortium. What does this mean? It means that the current browsers should start working at finalizing their support for the now official HTML 5.0 standard. This is great news! Great things are coming!
The news is hitting the web. Debian might be forked in case systemd is the only viable init system in the future. Pay attention to the word viable.
Today I discovered an issue with Firefox. It was a rather annoying issue, since it made Firefox skip its cache and loaded already visited content.
While navigating with the web developer console open (press F12 while inside a page to open, it's a lifesaver tool and a must for all web developers), I noticed that while visiting a site that I visited a couple of minutes ago, I looked at many 200 HTTP status codes for images. "This is strange" is the first thing that came to mind. Pressing F5, it loads the images again, while it shouldn't.
I'm glad to inform the PHP developers out there that the popular Yii PHP framework released the GA (generally available) version for the 2.0 branch. Yes, Yii 2.0.0 is finally here and is ready for production use.
This new version is written from the scratch, using all the features introduced in PHP 5.4, so it requires at least PHP 5.4 -I guess that's not a problem for people managing their own servers- to run, so go ahead, download it and play with it. The online documentation is as always very extensive (start with the Definitive Guide for version 2.0 and then go through the API reference). Beware that the code for the 1.1 branch will not run without changes in version 2.0, you will have to read the upgrade section. That's ok by me (breaking the backwards compatibility) if the new version brings many new features.
Kudos to the Yii core (and non-core) developers that helped in creating the new version. Great work guys!

Οι πρώτοι είναι αυτοί που (συνήθως) είναι άσχετοι με τον τεχνικό τομέα, με αποτέλεσμα να μην μπορούν να αντιληφθούν το κατά πόσο είναι κάτι εύκολο ή όχι να υλοποιηθεί βάση ορισμένων απαιτήσεων που θέτει ο πελάτης. Ο δε πελάτης, έχοντας ακούσει, δει κάτι που φαίνεται να είναι trendy και ακούγεται πολύ στην αγορά, μπορεί ορισμένες φορές να έχει παράλογες απαιτήσεις. Τις απαιτήσεις αυτές κάποια στιγμή πρέπει να τις ικανοποιήσει ο ειδικός. Ο ειδικός στην περίπτωσή μας είναι ο επιστημονικά καταρτισμένος στο αντικείμενό του άνθρωπος, ο οποίος υλοποιεί αυτά που ζητάνε οι πελάτες. Αλλά υλοποιεί προφανώς αυτά που έχουν λογική βάση. Στην προσπάθειά του λοιπόν να εξηγήσει σε πελάτη και project manager ότι ο πελάτης ζητάει πράματα που πολύ απλά δεν γίνονται, δεν έχουν βάση, βρίσκει εμπόδιο τόσο από τον project manager που θέλει να κλείσει τη δουλειά, να τελειώνει και να πηγαίνει στον επόμενο, όσο και στον πελάτη που θεωρεί πολύ φυσικά ότι αυτά που ζητάει είναι πράματα εφικτά και καταλήγει στο τέλος να είναι ο παράξενος της υπόθεσης, μπροστά στους υπολοίπους.

Αφορμή της παρούσας καταχώρησης είναι η εξέλιξη της τεχνολογίας. Πλέον είμαι συνδρομητής με γραμμή VDSL (είμαι σε μία από τις περιοχές που άρχισε να παρέχεται νωρίς) με γραμμή 50/5 Mbps (download/upload). Το σκέφτομαι και δεν κρύβω ότι μου έρχονται στο μυαλό αναμνήσεις από το 2005, όταν μίλησα με το 134 του ΟΤΕ και έκανα αίτηση για γραμμή ADSL...
Αυτή τη βδομάδα, ήμουν σε ένα σεμινάριο που διοργανώνει το ΕΚΔΔΑ (Εθνικό Κέντρο Δημόσιας Διοίκησης & Αυτοδιοίκησης), ο φορέας που αναλαμβάνει τις εκπαιδεύσεις των δημοσίων υπαλλήλων. Το θέμα του σεμιναρίου ήταν «Τα λειτουργικά συστήματα Unix και Linux». Το δήλωσα εξαρχής, γιατί θεώρησα ότι θα υπάρχουν σίγουρα πράματα που θα μάθαινα, αλλά επειδή και δεδομένης της (όποιας) εμπειρίας έχω με το Linux, θα ήθελα να δω αν όντως είναι ένα σεμινάριο που θα παρακολουθήσει κάποιος για να μπορέσει να έχει μια αρχική επαφή με το Linux και να αρχίσει την ενασχόλησή του με αυτό. Στο παρόν κείμενο, θα σας μεταφέρω την τελική μου άποψη.
99% of home ADSL connections involve a dynamic IP address. What happens if you want to access your inside network at home from the internet? This involves knowing from the beginning the IP address of your ADSL router (I do not include all the technical details to setup your router as needed to accept connections from outside). Yes, but as I said a few lines before, this IP address is dynamic... So?
A few months ago, I did some tests regarding the memory usage of PHP 5.4 with and without Xcache, compared to 5.3. You can read the article here. My conclusion at the time is that version 5.4 indeed dropped the memory footprint by a great deal and that by itself is a huge improvement.
This time, I thought of comparing all current major stable branches of PHP, in terms of speed and peak memory usage. So, I'm comparing the latest (as of now) versions of PHP 5.3.27, 5.4.22 and 5.5.6. This time, I'm looking for numbers with regard to speed and peak memory usage, without using any accelerator (like Xcache, APC, etc.).
Today, I had to install 64-bit Debian Wheezy (7.2) on a HP ProLiant ML 350 G5 server. I downloaded the netinst iso, burnt it and booted the server. I chose the Expert install at the GRUB screen loader and after a few options, it successfully detected the two network interfaces (both from Broadcom, different models, a NetXtreme II and a Tigon3). But it displayed a message that these nics require non-free firmware files and that I had to load them if I wanted the cards to work. Puzzled. I continued the installation, but as warned, the nics would not acquire an IP address from the DHCP server.
Back to the basics, search. The solution was finally rather simple. You have two options:
Since I had already burnt the official netinst image and I had no other empty CDs, I had to try the first option. I downloaded from http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/firmware/ the tar.gz (or zip) file for Wheezy, untarred (or unzipped) the files at an empty USB flash and rebooted the server, so that the installation will start again from scratch. The installation started and at the point of the warning message about the firmware files, I inserted the USB flash. I clicked on Yes to load the firmware files from a removable location and voilà! It worked. The installation finished after a few minutes (and it was rather quick).
I suppose the second option (the unofficial iso image with the firmware files already inside) will also work fine.
Another Linux deployment worked flawlessly.
